Pedagogies of Fabulism
Pedagogies of Fabulism examines the adaptation of animals in relation to the sphere of human influence. Evolutions that teeter on the line between the realms of magical and possible.
In the age of the Anthropocene, great disruptions in the global environmental equilibrium spawned a myriad of physical and behavioral adaptations resulting in widespread speciation. Perpetuated directly by the sphere of human influence, great rifts tear the natural world asunder, causing adaptation and evolution never before seen. Curious evolutions that teeter on the edge between the realms of the believable and of the magical.
The oppressive Diamond Cultivator Bee, Apis argyrodamantis, violently dominates the hives of competitor insects within Order Hymenoptera. Here, the bees have invaded the nest of the Paper Wasp, Vespidae polistinae, and have begun to incubate the precious stones alongside the pupae of the brood. When the young of the subjugated species eventually emerge, they are forced to tend to the cultivation of the diamonds and see to their full fruition.

The deep-water dwelling Pearl-Thief Crab scuttles along sandy low intertidal zones of the continental shelf. Calappa concafuris, descendant from the genus of shame-faced crabs, absconds with delicately formed pearls of the over-productive pearl-oyster, Pinctada supersum. Stealthily, the crab sidles alongside the oysters, purloins the shiny orbs, one clenched in each claw, and returns to his cache. A compulsive behavior, which as the volume of pearls increases, the more meaningless the objects becomes.

The duplicitous Calliophis metamorph has the ability to disguise itself through morphological mimicry and appear as more innocuous animals such as the Black-Throated Finch, Poephila cincta, allowing it to subtly approach its unsuspecting prey. Indigenous to the barren wastelands of North and South America wrought by over-industrialization, this predator has managed to thrive in an otherwise sterile environment. With each shape-shift the copperhead snake sheds its skin leaving behind the husk of its true self.

Indigenous to Southeast Asia, the dynastid Chalcasoma gemmatum, collects precious objects from the offerings within sacred human temples and shrines with which he adorns himself and his lair. His personal decoration not only is effective in mating rituals but also as defensive mimicry. In this case: gold bezels have become artificial ocelli attached to the beetle’s vertex. The persnickety bejeweled three-horned beetle spends most of its time strategically and meticulously arranges these precious objects as an attempt to allure and court mates but without ever doing so.

Fringillia phoenixae, commonly referred to as the Arctic Sooty Finch, endemic to the fringes of the inhospitable Arctic shores. This region only recently made habitable from general widespread atmospheric warming periods. This solitary species, adapted to the Arctic taiga, is largely flightless, conserving its energy for cursorial traits. The crepuscular feeding habits of the Arctic Sooty Finch provides many insects, as she captures a female Andesiana arctica moth for its hatchlings. Here, she is presumably met with disappointment, as her offspring emerges as charred remnants. Nevertheless, in a bizarre ritual of the avian world, the finch bathes in the ashes of it's stillborn young.

Serinus atrafuneris, or the Petroleum Canary, seethes a lugubrious substance similar in appearance and viscosity to crude oil. A combination of both the bird’s heavily polluted habitat (accredited to the bungling petroleum industry) and the physical manifestation of sorrow, the liquid is produced from a enlarged lymphatic system and discharged from the nares. The noxious ooze simultaneously repels predators and immobilizes prey. Any creature that approaches the canary and its unctuous excretion, plunges into abyssal despair.

The industrious Miner Mole, Talpa cuniculatae, creates a labyrinthine system of burrows through the earth laden with precious stones and minerals which are collected, sorted and stored to then later be disseminated among international buyers. One of the more clever and profiteering creatures in the animal kingdom, this scoricomorph localizes resources, workforce, and incorporates vertical integration into its subterranean industry.
